The best leaders always first make the best followers. In Nehemiah’s story, Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests were the first to get to work when the call was made to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem. Then the rest of the people followed. Jesus’ 12 disciples followed Him faithfully till His ascension to Heaven. They then became the 12 apostles whom God used to spearhead the preaching of the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Esther faithfully followed Mordecai’s charge and every protocol in the palace as queen to her king, which led to the rescuing of her entire people – the womb through which Jesus was to come to earth from.

Never underestimate or undermine the power of being a good follower. The world may have the wrong mindset that this is a place of subjugation and being secondary, but God uses these places as breeding grounds for us to rise to our fullest potential.

If anyone of us wants to be a great leader, we must first learn to be a great follower.

Pemimpin yang terbaik selalunya bermula sebagai pengikut yang terbaik. Dalam kisah Nehemia, Imam Besar Elyasib dan rakan-rakan imamnya adalah orang pertama yang mula bekerja apabila seruan dibuat untuk membina semula tembok Yerusalem. Kemudian, seluruh rakyat mengikuti jejak mereka. Dua belas murid Yesus mengikuti-Nya dengan setia sehinggalah peristiwa kenaikan-Nya ke Syurga. Mereka kemudiannya menjadi dua belas rasul yang digunakan Tuhan untuk menerajui penyebaran Injil sehingga ke hujung bumi. Ester dengan setia menurut perintah Mordekhai dan setiap protokol di istana sebagai ratu kepada rajanya, yang akhirnya membawa kepada penyelamatan seluruh bangsanya – keturunan yang menjadi jalan bagi Yesus datang ke dunia.

Jangan pernah memandang rendah atau memperkecilkan kuasa menjadi seorang pengikut yang baik. Dunia mungkin mempunyai tanggapan yang salah bahawa posisi ini adalah penindasan atau menjadi sekadar “nombor dua”, tetapi Tuhan menggunakan fasa-fasa ini sebagai tapak semaian untuk kita bangkit mencapai potensi yang sepenuhnya.

Jika sesiapa di antara kita ingin menjadi pemimpin yang hebat, kita mestilah terlebih dahulu belajar untuk menjadi pengikut yang hebat.
