Transformation happens when there is a resolve to change. The people did not just give lip service. They did not just express convicted deep emotions. They made a written oath to change, which included curses upon themselves for failing to do so. They were not soft on themselves but strong in their resolve.
Is this just a dramatic Old Testament legalism? Or a timeless principle?
Romans 8:13 warns us that “if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
The Amplified version describes it further: “for if you are living according to the [impulses of the] flesh, you are going to die. But if [you are living] by the [power of the Holy] Spirit you are habitually putting to death the sinful deeds of the body, you will [really] live forever.”
Crucify your sinful nature on the cross, and there will be transformation into
Christlikeness. This is a timeless discipleship principle.

Perubahan besar berlaku apabila wujudnya tekad untuk berubah. Umat itu tidak sekadar bercakap kosong. Mereka tidak sekadar meluahkan emosi penyesalan yang mendalam. Mereka membuat sumpah bertulis untuk berubah, malah merangkumi kutukan ke atas diri mereka sendiri jika gagal berbuat demikian. Mereka tidak berlembut dengan diri sendiri, sebaliknya teguh dalam tekad mereka.
Adakah ini hanya sekadar legalisme Perjanjian Lama yang dramatik? Atau satu prinsip yang tidak ditelan zaman? Roma 8:13 memberi amaran kepada kita bahawa, “jika kamu hidup menurut daging, kamu akan mati; tetapi jika oleh Roh kamu mematikan perbuatan-perbuatan tubuhmu, kamu akan hidup.”
Versi Amplified menjelaskannya dengan lebih lanjut: “kerana jika kamu hidup mengikut dorongan tabiat dosa, kamu akan mati. Tetapi jika kamu hidup oleh kuasa Roh[Kudus, kamu secara lazimnya mematikan perbuatan-perbuatan tubuh yang berdosa, kamu akan benar-benar hidup selama-lamanya.”
Salibkan kebiasaan dosa anda di atas kayu salib, maka perubahan menjadi seperti Kristus akan berlaku. Ini adalah prinsip pemuridan yang tidak ditelan zaman.
