Eliashib the high priest was the first builder mentioned. He rose up to do the work with the other priests, and they worked at rebuilding the Sheep Gate and the section of wall near there. The gates were entry and exit points to the city that are most vulnerable to enemy attacks. Hence, the work started at each gate and progressed from there.

Eliashib rose up to build. Rebuilding the walls of a city abandoned for a very long time was really hard work. It was sheer determination and commitment which demanded all kinds of delayed gratification and sacrifices on their part.

Great works are accomplished with great sacrifice. In this great work of building His church, much is required. The mindset of commitment with steely determination.

Philippians 3:14-15a

In view of our good reward, we put away excuses and delays. Instead, we renew our spiritual vitality. “Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees.” (Hebrews 12:12).
